People nowadays are very interested to know things regarding the diabetes and its effects on health and first question arising in their minds is that ” What is normal blood glucose(sugar) levels ?”. I hope this post will clear all those basic doubts regarding normal glucose levels and its regulation.
Important points to be remembered here are:
1. Levels are lower in morning and rise after meals.
2. Sugar levels consistently above 150 are indicative of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar, similarly levels falling consistently below 70 are suggestive of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
Hypoglycemia is a fatal condition where the symptoms include: loss of consciousness, irritability, lethargy and impaired metal function.
Hyperglycemia : persistent hyperglycemia causes diabetes mellitus , which is a major concern now this present world.
I hope you have got now some important information regarding the problems caused by abnormal glucose levels and now lets see the details regarding the glucose tests for monitoring its levels.
1. Fasting blood sugar test – Checks glucose levels after 8 hour fast and it is often the first test performed when checking for diabetes. normal levels for this test are – (70 mg -99 mg )
2. Two hour postprandial blood sugar test -Measures glucose levels 2 hours after taking a meal. normal levels for this test (70 mg to 145 mg)
3. Random blood sugar test - measures sugar levels randomly throughout the day , irrespective of meal timings. In this test if levels vary widely it could be a problem.normal levels for this test (70 mg -125 mg)
4. Oral glucose tolerance test -Checks glucose levels after taking a glucose drink.
Please note : If you think that you have abnormal sugar levels ,please contact your physician get your glucose levels checked and confirmed . Also note that there are several conditions which affect the glucose levels and the normal level range in a particular test also changes from lab to lab.
