Antidepressant Paxil Lowers Neurotic Behaviour And Educes Extroversive Nature

A new-fangled study indicates that in addition to being the treatment for depression, Paxil, an antidepressant could have a positive influence on personality attributes.

Scientists have stated that Paxil and possibly other kinds of antidepressants in the category of drugs known as SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors could bring about improvement in the predominantly observed increased neurotic levels and minimal extroversive behaviour that is prevalently associated with depression.

Neurotic behavioural patterns are categorized as being predisposed to having pessimistic feelings like nervousness, antagonism, feeling self-conscious, impetuousness, and susceptible to stress.

Extraversion is having the inclination towards optimistic, bright feelings, being assertive and expressive.

Paxil Could Bring about Positive Behavioural Modifications

In placebo managed clinical studies that had 240 entrants suffering from moderate to extreme levels of depressive tendencies, about half of the total adults that were part of the study were given Paxil, sixty went through cognitive therapy and sixty were given placebos for two months.

During the time periods that ranged between nine to sixteen weeks, half of the entrants that were given placebo were administered Paxil. Subsequently, there was a yearlong phase wherein half of whom were in the Paxil set remained on Paxil and half of them were offered placebo tablets instead of Paxil.

During the entire phase of the study there was supervision on the behavioural inconsistencies and depression. All the entrants were observed to have lesser depression by the concluding part of the second month.

Tony Z. Tang, a researcher who was part of the study stated that Paxil lowered neurotic levels and augmented levels of extraversion – both of which have been associated with the brain’s serotonin structure – on which Paxil and other SSRIs act upon.

Neurotic and Extroversive Behaviour

Several, if not majority of the individuals sense some form of neurotic behaviour inclusive of being prone to perceiving matters in a negative shade, abnormal anxiousness and angst.

Additionally, the patients that belonged to the Paxil set turned out to be more extrovert in approach, were more amenable to new-fangled experiences, more tranquil, lesser degree of self-consciousness and more in control of their rage.
